“The Alay Kapwa Lenten campaign of the Church is more than almsgiving,” said Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, Archbishop Edward Joseph Adams during the launch of Alay Kapwa this year at St. Joseph the Worker Cathedral, San Jose, Antique, February 8.
“Use this time of holy days to come close to God. Lent is a wonderful time, to look forward to this retreat every year; these forty days are in fact are too short, to care for the needy in society,” said the Archbishop in a Eucharistic celebration with several bishops and priests as concelebrants.
Alay Kapwa is the Lenten fund campaign of the Catholic Church in the Philippines. Established by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines in 1975, it is being implemented by the National Secretariat for Social Action (NASSA). Alay Kapwa’s guiding spirit is “offering one’s self to others” that calls everybody to share their time, talent and treasure with the poor.
This years theme is “Concern and care of the environment is a duty of every Christian community.” Now on its 33rd year the Alay Kapwa Program supports and sustains social action initiatives on peace advocacy, ecology, sustainable agriculture, children’s rights, disaster management, and other development projects.
