When the CBCP released their statement on February 10 calling the people for communal action for the recent situation of the country, many different reactions have aroused.
The Palace, through Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye, said, “We respect the CBCP’s call for communal action, it is premature.” This statement contradicted the statement released by Cabinet Secretary Ricardo Saludo who said the Palace supports the CBCP’s call for communal action.
According to Nueva Vizcaya Bishop Ramon Villena the Palace has clearly misinterpreted the call for communal action. Tuguegarao Archbishop Diosdado Talamayan supported Villena when he said that the communal action call of the CBCP was intended to urge people to kneel into prayer for peace and deep reflection.
Because of the misinterpretations of other bishops and even the Palace, Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, the CBCP President cleared the CBCP call in a statement released at the blog of the Archbishop.
On the other hand, different organizations and parishes held their own version of Mass for Truth as a sign of their support to the CBCP’s call.
Meanwhile Balanga Bishop Socrates Villegas said the country does not just need a new breed of leaders but also enlightened people, thus change must start from within every Filipino. “Each and everyone must be the reformed Filipino that we want our public officials to become. We must change ourselves so that society and government will change,” he said.
